Jane Gardner is a pianist and composer based in Edinburgh, Scotland. She holds a PhD in Composition from Goldsmiths College, London University. As a silent film accompanist she has played to many cinema audiences around the country, at festivals including Bird’s Eye View at the British Film Institute in London, and the Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema, Bo’ness. Awards include the 1994 Major Composer’s Bursary from the Scottish Arts Council and the prestigious Gullivar Award Bursary, nominated by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, to study Indonesian music in Java. Her concert hall works have been commissioned and performed by groups such as the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Piano Circus (6 pianos) and the Mistry String Quartet. She has worked extensively in Theatre and Dance, and has composed for companies such as Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and acrobatic string group The Gogmagogs. As a music copyist and orchestrator, she regularly works with composer/producer Jim Sutherland, most recently on Disney Pixar’s BRAVE soundtrack. She is currently transcribing and typesetting the life’s work of Scottish folk musician Freeland Barbour. She also writes for youth music organisations, and for her piano students of all ages.
